On one of the walls facing the Pilgrims´ Way to Santiago, Bodegas Irache has a Wine Fountain, so that pilgrims can serve themselves a free glass of wine to spur them on their way. This stretch of the Way to Compostela was already renowned for the quality of the local wine in the 12th century and the Calixtine Codex mentions âEstella, land of Good Bread and Optimal Wineâ. The Fountain appears in numerous guides to the Pilgrims´ Way and there are hundreds of references to it on the Internet. Thousands of people of different nationalities have visited the Fountain. If you wish to have the Wine Fountain stamp on your Pilgrim´s Credential you may request it at our offices on weekdays and at the Wine Museum on Saturdays and holidays.
The Wine Fountain, or Fountain of Irache, was built in 1991 from cut stone and bears two texts for pilgrims:
"We are pleased to invite you to drink in moderation. If you wish to take the wine with you, you will have to buy it."
"Pilgrim, if you wish to arrive at Santiago full of strength and vitality, have a drink of this great wine and make a toast to happiness."
There is a web cam pointing at the fountain where you can see pilgrims in real time. The fountain is open from 8.00 am to 8.00 pm.
